Maybe you haven't heard; the Sun is misbehaving and solar scientists are scratching their heads. The solar cycle lasts about 11 years as activity alternately increases and decreases. During periods of decreased activity there are fewer sunspots, fewer charged particles are emmitted that flow to earth, communications worldwide aren't quite as good, etc. The opposite is true when the number of sunspots increases.
